HLG Wales Spring Study Day
May 6, 2008The Spring Study Day for HLG Wales happened on the 2nd of May at Swansea University’s Library and Information Centre. We had 14 people in attendance from all sectors of healthcare libraries – it is nice to have such a variety of people there! The theme was on Web2.0 for health libraries.
The day began with a talk by Rebecca Mogg, Cardiff Univeristy, on podcasting. Cardiff University Library has a great blog on writing an essay, which can be found at - http://www.xpressradio.co.uk/shows/student-survival-guide-to-writing-a-good-essay . After the presentation, everyone was given the opportunity to try out podcasting themselves using the Audacity software. Participants were asked to interview each other on why they have gone into health librarianship and what changes they have seen since their first job.
After a very large and tasty lunch buffet and AGM, the programme continued with a presentation on Current Awareness. Unfortunately the original speaker could not make the day, so Katrin and I waffled through the notes and the presentation! Luckily there were a lot of good suggested sites for people to go to and points to ponder. All due to the good powerpoint and notes from the creator!
The day finished with blogging as Jane Perry, Powys Local Health Board, spoke about her blogging experience – http://powyslhblibrary.blogspot.com/ . Jane, like most of us, has fallen into blogging accidently and has come up with a very informative site for information. Everyone then was able to break into groups and try blogging out themselves, using WordPress free blogging site. As usual with every piece of technology, some things didn’t work on the day for everyone! But at least we got a flavour of what blogging is all about.
Our next study day in the Autumn will be on teaching critical appraisal skills – one that is bound to be very popular!!
