Welsh NHS e-Library

October 28, 2008

We are pleased to see that the Welsh Assembly Government has now given Informing Healthcare the authority to proceed with the re-procurement of e-library resources. This valuable resource is at the core of our health professionals’ ability to access evidence to improve the healthcare of those living in Wales.

The sustainability of this e-Library is a concern to us all – and Librarians in the NHS across Wales have done a stellar job in bringing this issue to the fore-front.  There is a need for change on how this resource is managed and delivered (this is not to say Informing Healthcare was doing a bad job; they seemed to be caught in the middle many times).  It is HLG Wales’ feeling that there needs to be:

1.  A full-time, dedicated person who manages the e-Library.  Managing a national electronic resource includes negotiating with providers and publishers, as well as maintaining the technical details to make sure the resources subscribed to are actually available and up and running.  Regular evaluation of the resources needs to take place.  This cannot be a job which is tagged onto another person’s job description; this important job demands a full-time, dedicated employee to oversee the e-library.

2.  Recurring budget line for national e-resources for healthcare.  There is no turning back the clock on this one.  The need to access important and informative articles, book chapters and databases has been proven by the amount of protest at the loss of these resources recently.  To procure these core titles at a local level would be devistating to libraries, as well as an expensive and time consuming venture for the librarians and their insufficient resource budgets.  To avoid the inequality of access to information across Wales, and to procure more effectively, the core journal and book titles need to be procured nationally and available through the e-Library.

It is a testiment to the Librarians working in Wales, as well as those working with us in Informing Healthcare, that the funding to re-procure has come through.

HLG Conference Part 2

June 21, 2008

The Conference is only a month away.  We are looking forward to welcoming library and information professionals from across the UK to the beautiful city of Cardiff.  The HLG Conference committee has done a wonderful job in drawing together an interesting and diverse group of speakers.  Wales will be well represented, from the Tuesday Keynote Speaker being Tony Jewel, CMO for Wales, to speakers and poster presenters from librarians and researchers across Wales.

HLG Wales is hosting a Pre-Conference Dinner on the Sunday.  This has proved very popular and is now “sold-out”.  If you were not able to get into the dinner, I am sure you will see the group wandering around the Mermaid Quay cafe and bar area after dinner!  If the weather is nice, this is a lovely place to gather on a summer’s evening.

HLG Conference

May 21, 2008

The HLG Conference isn’t too far away.  Thank goodness it is in Cardiff!  It will be good to show off Wales (let’s all pray for sunshine!).  If you haven’t registered yet, you still can at http://www.cilip.org.uk/groups/hlg/conf2008/registration.html .

If you are coming to stay on the Sunday night before the conference, HLG Wales will be hosting a dinner at Bayside Brasserie at Cardiff Bay.  If you would like to come to the dinner, please e-mail Lori Havard at l.d.havard@swan.ac.uk to make your reservation.  Menus will come out to you a few weeks before for pre-ordering.  We have a limit of 35, so get your reservations in quickly!
